Practical implications – The results of the study lend support to the future of medical science in developing stem cells harvesting technology in Malaysia. Young couples going to form a household who age between 22-35 years old are the potential influence to the society to increase the awareness of this advance technology. Keywords – Stem cell, Social Cognitive Theory, and Media Dependency Theory Paper type – Research paper About the author: Lim Yoke Theng is currently in her final year pursuing her Bachelor in Mass Communication (Hons) with INTI International University, Malaysia. The author can be reach by email ([emailprotected] com) Research on Stem cell awareness among Malaysians . 1 Introduction Stem cell research is relatively new in Malaysia (Ministry of Health Malaysia, 2008). Stem cells are cells capable of developing into other types of cells and tissues. According to former research, stem cell have been viewed and can be harvested within the context of the embryo because it is within these early stages that we see the dramatic transitions of stem cells forming a range of tissues and organ systems. Later on, it can be found in adult physical body and called as adult stem cell. It now seems that probably all tissues contain adult stem cells, however, in insignificant numbers. Scientists reflect that the cells remain dormant until activated by disease or injury to that tissue. Stem cell research can potentially assist in treating a range of medical problems (Experiment Resources, 2008). It could lead humanity closer to better treatment and possibly cure a number of diseases: * Parkinson’s Disease * Alzheimer’s Disease * Heart Diseases, Stroke and Diabetes (Type 1) * Birth Defects * Spinal Cord Injuries Replace or Repair Damaged Organs * Reduced Risk of Transplantation (You could possibly get a copy of your own heart in a heart-transplantation in the future) * Stem cells may play a major role in cancer Besides, this research may also be able to explain how stem cells can be harvested and where can we found the stem cells on human body, the method and means of harvesting. To make the picture clearer to the public, functions of stem cells need to be strengthened and emphasized in medical field instead of stem cell harvesting and storage service. If stem cell is indeed the appealing alternative to those patients who struggle to live or to die, it may increase the level of awareness among Malaysia society and affect the achievement of Malaysia Medical Science Field. Patients who suffer from Alzheimers, stem cell transplantation is an option for them to recover from that disease, it has no cure but a drug called ARICEPT has been used by millions of people to help their symptoms (New York Methodist Hospital, 2010).

Recommendation After the overall marketing research regarding this company, we would make some recommendation about the product, market development, marketing technique, public promotion and sales rules and regulation. Talking about the product, PADINI has never come out with unisex merchandise, as our experience as promoter in this company, we always get this question from customer .Also, we would suggest PADINI may make some couple design since the company is already well-established, these two product may probably open a new market to new young generation as their target, the company may choose the A outlet to do market testing by coming out limited quantity. While for marketing technique, we can see PADINI has not yet to explore in the online buying. We suggest PADINI can set up a blog which contain all brands product. Before that, perhaps the company must set up an IT department to do IT support for future transaction and create a IT system to company. They may co-operate with some banks to offer discount by using online banking service. On the other hands, PADINI can also cooperate with some local distributors in the Malaysia like Citi-link or Sky Net to send out the order. Every transaction made by the customer will be shown a payment statement and it was guaranteed by the bank. Besides, the distribution of the order will directly send to the stated address according to the information stated on the order form by the customer. Then, since PADINI is already well-known in fashion industry, we believe they are able to do a fashion show by hiring professional model, wearing their new products and having a fashion show .The company may invite some fashion professional ,helping to to advertising and promote their company. Besides, the company can organize a model show or competition by wearing their new products in specific mall like Gurney or Mid Valley, this will cost lesser. Furthermore, PADINI can sponsor to some well-known ladies magazine with conditions that include few pages which advertising about PADINI new products in every publication of magazine, for example Vogue and Nirvana Women. Historical Net Profit of PADINI From Year 2004- 2010 The histogram above showed that the net profit of PADINI from the year 2004- 2010. We can see that, the net profit of PADINI is dramatically increase from 2004- 2010 with the percentage of 1% to 12.2%. Besides, PADINI state that they forecast an average annual net profit growth of 10% in year 2011 and 2012 because of the demand for the PADINI products due to their strong branding and strategic store locations, as well as improved efficiency of warehousing, inventory management, design and product mix. Stock Split Besides, PADINI also carry out the stock split program to make its stock price cheaper than before in 5 times at 6 January 2011, being the market day after the books closing date. Share split involving the subdivision of each ordinary share of RM0.50 each held in PADINI Holdings Berhad into five ordinary shares of RM0.10 each. This action is to attract more investor to invest into their company. PADINI HOLDINGS BERHAD (History earnings, dividends and share price)

America Needs the Stop-loss Program Essay -- Argumentative Persuasive

America Needs the Stop-loss Program The scary reality of the war on Iraq is something all Americans face today, the reality being, what happens if we do not have enough soldiers to continue all of the projects that the United States have already started. Does America have enough troops for what they are doing? Can America afford to tell people when they leave the military, thanks and we wish the best for you with civilian life, or should they be fighting to keep them as long as possible? America spend the money to keep the soldiers employed and across the waters to keep the promises made to make Iraq a democratic country? America needs to continue their fight, even if it means to maintain solders longer then they once thought. With the â€Å"Stop-loss program† introduced by President George W. Bush, the military finally received the power needed to persevere the numbers needed in winning the War on Iraq. Since June of 2004, 800 soldiers have died while fighting the war in Iraq, as well as nearly 4,700 wounded in battle, reported Pete Yost in the Associated Press, on June 1, 2004. Not only is the military losing soldiers due to death or being wounded, but there have also been a large number of people who, when they are discharged from the military, do not reenlist, but instead they want to go and try their luck in the civilian world. The rate America keeps losing their men and women, in Iraq proves that something needs to be done to keep the military in the high supply needed. How can the promise made to the Iraqi civilians be kept if there is not enough man power to finish what was started? Plus the number of civilians who have been signing up has drastically decreased. That is why President Bush’s â€Å"stop-loss program† otherwise known as the â€Å"back-door draft† is crucial for our continuing fight. According to what is written in the policy â€Å"The policy is designed to assist in meeting manpower requirements for future operations, and will, therefore, evolve to remain relevant to future operations, and will, therefore, evolve to remain relevant to future developments in mission requirements and our involvement in current operations.† (Maradmin 007/03). This policy was put into effect after September 11, 2001 in order to keep the military numbers up. With the â€Å"stop-loss policy† America is fighting to keep their military well stocked... ...ing the military how can they afford to keep people there? If a promise to a country is made, then the country needs to be willing to keep the promise to the best of their ability. The United States, could not win the war without the soldiers who fought in it, and they cannot give Iraq the freedom promised if they do not have enough men and women in combat. The stop-loss program that President Bush set up and put into play is something that was very needed in the country during this time of conflict. In conclusion, there are many reasons why the â€Å"back-door draft† is something that is needed in today’s society. American is trying it’s hardest to spread freedom and democracy around the world, to countries that have not been able to obtain it on their own. The military plays a massive role in the gift that America is giving to Iraq, without the military the old Iraqi government would still be in charge, and they would be a lot further away from freedom. With President Bush’s stop-loss program, it does just that; it stops the loss we were suffering with the deaths and discharges of soldiers and keeps the military full of soldiers who have first hand experience.

Christian Dior Essay

The House of Dior – A fashion house that over six decades is still going strong. From a humble beginning to a power house of fashion, this house of fashion has begun a â€Å"New Look† for their market during the start if it’s business and beyond. With avant-garde designs, Christian Dior has changed women’s fashion in his era. Starting a fashion business is no mean feat. One may need all the preparation and planning in order to be successful and have your creations reach the market. The House of Christian Dior Christian Dior, a Frenchman, started his career in the 1930’s by selling his sketches to numerous prospective clients. Soon his market was in love with his sketches and designs and that deemed his creations as a â€Å"New Look†. With such creations, Christian Dior needed financial support that was when he got Marcel Boussac (a textile manufacture) to back him up to open his own house of fashion. Boussac was able to persuade Christian Dior to have him set up his place along a trendy Paris street, which Boussac was readily able to fund Christian Dior’s endeavours. With such financial support, Christian Dior began to produce creations that were considered avant-garde at that time and he was able to freely create and design whatever he had come up with without any financial difficulty (Bawa, 2002). Christian Dior knew what he wanted in life and that was to be a part of the arts. He loved to draw and sketch and to create masterpieces. This has made him successful; he knew what he wanted to do. For an aspiring entrepreneur, one must know that before they start their own clothing line or fashion business they need to know that this is what they really want to. If not, the outcome would be less successful or become a failure (Amed, 2007). Christian Dior had financial support that one can dream of. For an entrepreneur, they need to have financial stability, business partners, and the like to easily start their business. Without this, it would be a tough challenge to get by to launch a business or even try to start one. When it comes to materials, Christian Dior did not have any problems in having a short supply of that. He had his business partner to thank for and this gave him an advantage to turn his creations into reality (Charleston, 2004). One must take note that during his time it was during the Second World War that textiles were rationed. He took the initiative to have women, not only in Paris, but throughout the whole world to have them feel more feminine. He had that idea and turned it into a reality. Even if his designs and creations were well received by his peers and prospective clients, there were numerous detractors that openly disliked his attitude. They deemed Christian Dior as extravagant due to his designs using fabric up to eighty yards long. One must see that Christian Dior clearly didn’t have a market due to the hardships that the whole world was currently going through. What he did was he created one. It wasn’t merely being in the right time and at the right place, he saw the need that women wanted during his time, and he began to create the solution to that even at the cost of being deemed extravagant and being boycotted by powerful governments of state. Still he persevered and went on with his plan to change the world fashion market. With Christian Dior’s untimely death in 1957, the house of Dior was stopped suddenly in their tracks, but Dior did not leave his house open for attack, he had two competent men under him that can drive his fashion house beyond. Yves St. Lauren stepped in and headed the House of Dior into success with his designs. The house of Dior had numerous changes in the artistic development and currently has John Galiano. Starting a fashion business needs the entrepreneur to be at least five or ten steps ahead and having a fresh outlook and flow of ideas that they want to put into their market. They need to also know the latest trends and fads that the current market has in order to supply what the client wants. Not only having those ideas one must have a very good business plan in order to plan and execute strategies, decisions, and plans of actions when situations arises, especially those that are out of the box scenarios. The bottom line is that one must have passion for what they believe in. They need to believe in what they do is the right thing to do. Without these, starting up a business or even just planning for it would make all attempts useless and unfruitful. References: Amed, I. (2007). Year-Round Schooling essays

Year-Round Schooling essays Initially I did not agree with it, and I never thought I would be advocating it, but year-round schooling (YRS) does have several merits. YRS is a concept which reorganizes the school year to provide more continuous learning by spacing the long summer vacation into shorter, more frequent vacations throughout the year. This essay will explore three reasons why this option should be more widely adapted in Ontario schools. The year-round school curriculum is much better suited to the working family schedules, it allows more continuous learning, and decreases the likelihood of burnout of teachers and students. Though this idea is a suggestion that is radically different from the traditional curriculum approach in North America, it may well be time to try it. The long-established, customary North American family, has two working parents and a child/children who are in school. Working parents usually have a two-week summer break. Having their children in a year-round system will better correlate quality family time and vacations. Families can spread out their vacation time and visit locations that are less expensive or crowded during the traditional school year. In the nine-month school year, kids are often sent to camp, summer school, or left at home either alone, or with a babysitter during the summer vacation. If children are left alone, they will feel neglected and will begin to forget most of what they obtained throughout the school year. If children are left home with a babysitter, it is a hassle for parents to find one for the entire summer. This system will coordinate with parents lives and community activities very nicely. The YRS is a family-friendly approach to school schedules and is being experimented with many different school boards. This radical new approach developing in North America d ...

Jackson Destruction of the Bank Essay

Jackson Destruction of the Bank Essay Jackson Destruction of the Bank Essay Erik Neri Student ID: 8257678 Word count:1834 RESEARCH QUESTION: Why was president Andrew Jackson opposed to the national bank, and why did he destroy it? The legitimacy of President Jackson’s reaction to the Bank War issue has been contradicted by many, but his reasoning was supported by fact and inevitably beneficial to the country. Jackson’s primary involvement with the Second Bank of the United States arose during the suggested governmental re-chartering of the institution. It was during this period that the necessity and value of the Bank’s services were questioned. Jackson’s destruction of the bank was necessary because it was unconstitutional. Congress didn’t have the right to create such a bank. The Bank favored Northeastern states over southern and western states. I will go in depth to his core beliefs of why he hated banks in general. Part B: Summary of evidence The United States government in 1816 chartered the Second Bank of the United States. It had a 20-year charter, which was to expire in 1836. Despite this, the Bank was privately owned and during the age of Jackson, the president was Nicholas Biddle. The Bank was large in comparison to other banks, being responsible for 15-20% of bank loans in the United States and accounting for 40% of the banknotes in circulation. Also, the Bank held a specie reserve of 50% of the value of its notes, when normally other banks only had a specie reserve of 10-25% (Davis 1). In addition to the powerful coordination the Bank possessed, it influenced interest rates for loans to the working class and the rate of inflation in the US. Because of the use of various banknotes, changing from bank to bank due to the lack of national currency and mixture of specie, people trusted that each bank would be able to â€Å"cash in† their bank note for coins in return. This did not always hold true, but the Second Bank of the United States was the most trusted of the banks to supply specie in exchange for their banknotes. Because of this most people, in order to protect themselves from losing money, would exchange state bank notes for note s issued by the Second Bank. However, this meant that the Second Bank could threaten the state banks by demanding more gold, which might cause for their bankruptcy. As a result, the state banks were pressured into not being able to over issue their bank notes, which eventually decreased their importance and power in the nation by decreasing the circulation of their bank notes. This was the greatest argument posed by the leaders of the state banks against the Second Bank of the United States (Roughshod 2). Despite the oncoming bankruptcy of the state banks, prior to Jackson’s administration the government did not show much support in their survival. In fact, the government played a large role in the functioning of the Second Bank. Firstly, although it had been a privately owned institution, Congress and the President supervised its operations (Davis 1). Secondly, out of the twenty-five stockholders of the Bank, five of these were government owned. Thus showing support of the Bank by subscribing to one-fifth of its $35 million (Schlesinger 74). In addition, among t he Bank’s functions was to hold all government money, sell all government bonds, and make commercial loans. However, no voters could dictate its policies or reign in its power, due to its privately owned status (Roughshod 2). Finally, the government also allowed banknotes to be used as payment for taxes. With the Jackson administration into office, the Second Bank of the United States became threatened. President Jackson had a private prejudice that wasn’t party policy (Schlesinger 74). He hated banks, all banks, but he especially hated the Second Bank of the United States. He viewed all bankers as â€Å"little more than parasites who preyed upon the poor and honest working people of America† (Roughshod 2). The reason for his hatred most likely came from his near ruin as a businessman (land speculator,

multinational Company analyze essays

multinational Company analyze essays There are many competing mobile phone companies in the market and more and more new entrants everyday. Nokia is one of the leading companies in the mobile phone industry and has more than 30 market segments in different countries around the world. To compare the Nokias market line in different countries different websites in five different countries were observed: Nokia United Kingdom, Nokia China, Nokia Deutschland, Nokia France, and Nokia USA to analyze the difference. First point worth mentioning is the difference in languages for the various websites of different countries. Observing this we see the localization necessary so that the local people can understand the websites info and review the product line. In most of the websites, the standardized information is translated and the main pages are designed in a similar format with some variations in the layout. However, many of the sites when most of the site links are visited the observable difference can be distinguished. Some of the phones offered in one countrys website are were not offered in the other websites, thus some cultural influences can be seen in the different websites. For example the Nokia 9500 offered in UK is not offered in France or Germany. The Nokia 9500 folds open to display a screen for internet access, receiving stock updates and emails. The UK market is more likely to purchase the 9500 for their lifestyle implementation then the market in France or Germany. The website in China emphasizes more on chatting and instant messenger and stay connected with friends. At the US website, there are emphases on the reliability and easy operation of the products; and many accessory links are provided. The website for France however does not provide the extensive accessory link provided by the US site. Nokia adapted or localized its website to best provide the information desirable for the market segment it is presenting to. In all websites ...

Evaluate to what extent intellectual property law adequately protects Essay

Evaluate to what extent intellectual property law adequately protects the rights of enteratinment business personalities(real persons only) - Essay Example The pirated goods generally include CDs, computer software and videos. This practice violates the interests of both consumers and inventors. The rate of produce will certainly go up once it comes to the hands of consumer. At the same time, the inventor or producer feels aggrieved that others have been able to capitalize on his work which involves a considerable investment of time and money. Hence this violates the basic principles and interests of original talented artists in entertainment industry. The intellectual property law guarantees the persons rights to have their own qualities, but at the same time the right of expression of press people also gets clashed with this and in case of England the right of freedom of expression dominates the right of privacy of artists (Attorney-General v Guardian Newspapers Ltd,1990)1. However in some situations the right of privacy of artists was well protected by the intellectual property rights (La Forest J in R v Dymont,1988)2. This case conc erns about invasion of privacy and wrongful disclosure of private information. It stresses the importance between freedom of expression and respect for an individuals privacy. Both are vitally important rights. Neither has precedence over the other. A proper degree of privacy is very much essential for the well-being and development of an individual. Article 8 states that the right of privacy of information is to be protected and should be in tune with the common law. Similarly the article 10 declares that the right of freedom of information is also crucial and there should be balance between the article 8 and article 10 (Reynolds v Times Newspapers Ltd,2001) 3. Some legal instruments in the world like intellectual property law provide sufficient justice to the genuine artists. Intellectual property law is one of the most important legal document which certainly protects the rights of the artists in the entertainment industry (Bainbridge, 2006). However there has

Racist Skinhead Subculture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4000 words

Racist Skinhead Subculture - Essay Example The racial skinhead subculture is similar to neo-Nazi ideologies in the sense that aggression is mainly targeted to certain racial groups. In this case scenario, the most hated are often Jews, since the skinheads view them as the ones who have taken all the economic privileges in the country. They also abhor blacks and other races, whom they consider as inferior races to the white race. Over the past three decades, the racist skinhead subculture has continually evolved to be more sophisticated in the way it uses the internet to spread its propaganda. Though various extremist skinhead activities were weakened after 9/11 attacks in the US due to another of issues such as arrest of some leaders and death of another (Sinderbrand, 2004:38), since 2004, and over the past five years most of the groups have been regrouping, getting integrated and increasingly carrying out race motivated attacks on people (Anti Defamation League, 2012a:1). Since such groups often surge during times of economic distress and seek to put blames on various racial groups for taking away all jobs in the economy, I contend that it is probably due to the recent economic recession that most of these racist skinheads have regrouped. It is due to this reason that this paper finds it important to study the intricacies of the brand community of the skinhead subculture, and specifically the racist skinhea ds.... It is due to this reason that this paper finds it important to study the intricacies of the brand community of the skinhead subculture, and specifically the racist skinheads. The study will use subculture theory to understand why the skinhead group is a subculture and to tease out specific elements and themes concerning a specific example of racist skinhead: Hammerskin Nation. It will also analyze empirical studies as to attributes of this group in order to understand their practice. To this end, the key research questions will be what the main characteristics of the brand Hammerskin Nation are, why they have these characteristics and why they are a subculture based on clear themes concerning their movements that have been teased out and highlighted theoretical attributes. Literature review Historical perspective of the racial Skinhead The start of the skinhead head movement can be traced in the UK back in the 1950s and the 1960s. During this time several young people defined themsel ves separately by adopting a high stylish lifestyle bordered on mainly styles adopted by the British rock bands, US R$B, as well as movie stars. Brown (2004: 175) observes these earlier young people known as mods, who were less inclined to violence, became known for their devotion to music, fashion, scooters and their general consumerism. Since not all of the fashion trendy adhering to mod subculture could afford to have the latest trends in fashion, the group split off into two, the well off referred to as the smooth mods and the working class mods who could less afford the fashion trends. Nordstrom and Robben (1995:87) show that due to this the hard mods preferred to be sported in suspenders, boots and straight legged jeans. The hard mods mainly enjoyed he hard rock,

Violations of the Code of Ethics - Research Paper Example In this regard, it is important to understand that the personal integrity can be defined as those ethical values that are commonly understood and practiced across the society and to some extent they also reflect code of ethical behavior (Wells, 2011.p. 18). In the conflict of interest video, Willy Wilson violated the ethical rule of personal integrity. Conflict of interest is defined as a situation in which personal interest and official duties collide and there is little room to justify the position in that situation (Council of Europe, 2008. p.85). In the video, Willy Wilson tried to serve both personal interest and the official duties simultaneously which is tantamount to the violation of the ethical code no. 6 of American Society for Public Administration. Ethical codes are also developed by the ICMA. Tenet number 10 states that members must not seek favor and this favor can be in the shape of gifts or profits that have been received secretly (International City/County Management Association, 2014). In the story of bribe video, Mike Peters violates the tenet no. 10 of the ICMA Code of Ethics. Mike Peters is a senior analyst working for NASA. It is a part of his official job description to evaluate and recommend software. While recommending the software, he insisted that the recommended software should be purchased from Peace organization which sold the similar software. Later on, it was reported that Mr. Peters was offered and received valuable gifts from Peace organization and such gifts were only given for recommending purchase of software from Peace organization. In this regard, it is important to understand that if the value of gifts was considerably smaller than the purchase price of software, there were chances that it would have not been termed as a form of bribe. But that was not the case. A higher value of

Letter of Advice - Essay Example In verbal communication the person uses the help of his voice to send over messages to the other person whereas non verbal communication is a form in which voice is not used. Non verbal communication includes memos, emails, and other social software as well as eye movement, postures, facial expression, gestures and so on. To develop a perfect sort of communication it is necessary that some elements are kept into view. This brief would further take all these elements into view and provide with the related needs of communication at work and in personal interactions (Taylor 2001). To develop an effective interpersonal communication network it is necessary for the individuals to keep several factors in mind while communicating. In personal relationships, the communication network needs not be formal like letters or memos, yet needs to be perfect in transmitting the messages and views. For instance, if one partner wants to go out, he/she needs to communicate this desire rather than relying on the idea that the other partner will himself/herself identify and fulfill it. To achieve this it is necessary for the person who is communicating to reach clarity. By clarity here it is meant that the person who is communicating should be very clear in stating his thesis of the message. The words chosen by the communicator should be very precise which are clear enough for the other individual’s intellect. Thus it is necessary that the communicator does not drag his message up to critical levels where the other listener gets confused by the message. This confusion ca n therefore lead to several other problems in the relationships (Kelly 1979 & Taylor 2001). Dear Sara and Tim, my advice to you for a successful relationship is to maintain a level of understanding and frankness which allows you to speak out ‘clearly’ your innermost feelings and communicate your expectation without hesitation. A jornal opinion article - Essay Example The country’s exports also fell, considerably, due to slow-down of economies in countries like China and Euro zone nations. According to the article, the corporate decision makers are delaying their investment plans, as they have their own apprehensions on Federal Budget Policies and forthcoming US elections. These factors, among others are reasons for delaying the investment decisions by those responsible for corporate spending. As they are delaying the implementation of big projects, partly due to slow demand, world-wide, the big businesses are looking forward to government action on issues involving ‘tax cuts’ and ‘fiscal deficit’. During the meeting with President Obama, top executives of leading companies, including Apple and JP Morgan Chase agreed to work together for betterment of investment climate in the country. As the article date is 19 Nov 2012, it informs the readers that the spending by major corporate businesses was excellent during the whole year, except the recent months when it slowed down considerably. This was supported by the figures quoted in the article, which showed that S&P’s listed 500 stock index companies spent around $ 580 billion on the purchase of plant and equipment for business expansion. However, the reversal in the capital expenditure plans, during the third quarter of 2012 was a sign of worry for the future, although the current scenario presented in the article was not that gloomy. The slow down was due to lower fuel prices, higher job opportunities and better housing market. The article has held the global slowdown responsible for the reversal of investment plans in third quarter of 2012. Giving an example of reducing demand of coal and other minerals in China, the article informs that the result of this has been reduced orders for earth moving and other heavy equipment for American giant ‘Caterpillar Inc.’. Describe either a good or a bad experience with a sales person. What made it good or bad - Essay Example I received a call from the holiday promoters that I had won a short holiday to a beach resort, and to avail this prize I had to visit their office. As advised, I reached their office and received a warm welcome by the marketing agent. Before explaining about the prize that I won, this agent started explaining about their company and various products they offered. The bottom-line information was not being provided. I had to intervene and ask specifically about the product because I did not have the time as well as patience to listen about something that I was not really interested. Upon interrupting, the agent started explaining about the prize, which was a holiday to a beach resort. When I confirmed that I would be interested to go on a holiday by using this prize, I was shown a very different picture. The agent then started explaining the process of availing this, so called, prize. I then realized this was not a prize, but a marketing and sales promotion activity. To avail the holiday, I had to spend money and would be given stay at subsidized rate, and hence was not free of cost; the rest of the costs had to be borne by myself. This was totally shocking and displeasing experience as I was not ready for such risky expenses at that time. Upon learning about my low level of interest in this scheme, the agent put me through his marketing manager. This manager, indeed, continued with the sales promotion of the holiday package and also tried to meet his other targets by promoting products like ‘life-time’ holiday membership to various destinations across the world and so on. The initial holiday package, which was promoted as a lucky prize was a trial sales purchase promotion that did not impress me and also did not seem genuine. Although this attempt from the hotel company was an attempt to reach customers, the sampling and proposed contests did not cohere with my requirements, interests and situation. War Photographer Essay Example for Free

War Photographer Essay The poet creates a gloomy and depressing mood, which is evident through the language used throughout the poem, and the vivid imagery that the poet creates in our minds. These aspects help to express the theme of the poem, which is the cruelty of war and human suffering. Firstly, the poet uses language to bring out the overall glum mood of the poem. In the first stanza, cumulative listing is used with the line â€Å"Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh. † This overwhelms the reader with the immense number of places where war is common, bringing about a sense of gloominess and wide spread depression. Furthermore, by using the phrase â€Å"Something is happening†, the poet captivates our interest by creating a mood of suspense, such that the readers will predict that something bad is imminent, contributing to the depressing mood of the poem. The phrase â€Å"hands which did not tremble then though seem to now† depicts that the dark scene of war was able to inflict fear into the heart of a strong hearted man, showing the cruelty of war and what it can cause. Therefore, the language used in this poem helps to bring out the glum mood of the poem, mainly by captivating the readers and forcing them into thinking that something bad is going to happen next. Secondly, the poet uses vivid imagery to create a depressing and dark mood throughout the poem. In the first stanza, the phrase â€Å"darkroom he is finally alone† paints a picture depicting the depressing feel of war, when the world is dark and devoid of happiness, and the photographer being â€Å"finally† alone tells us that he himself is glad to be away from the suffering in war, which brings out the gloomy mood of the poem. The â€Å"red† light symbolize the blood shed during war, and the phrase â€Å"all flesh is grass† tells us that with all the explosions and firing going on during the war, the flesh of dead soldiers has become as common a sight to see as the grass growing around us. In the second stanza, the phrase â€Å"fields which don’t explode beneath the feet of running children in a nightmare heat† explicitly describes a scene of war, with landmines exploding, and that this has become such a common sight to see for the photographer that he is glad to be away from all the depression. The sight of running children accidently running into a minefield and blowing up shows us the nightmare that war causes, and causes the reader to be worried for the children, for their next step might be their last. In the beginning of the third stanza, â€Å"faintly start†¦ half- formed ghost† immediately brings out a dark mood as ghosts are associated with souls who have unfinished business after their untimely death. The â€Å"cries of this man’s wife† shows us the sorrow in her heart brought about by her husband’s death, which is affirmed by â€Å"blood stained into foreign dust†, depicting that the soldier had died fighting. The fact that the photographer thought of his work as â€Å"what someone must [do]† tells us that he does not enjoy what he is doing, but thinks of it as a necessity, thus exemplifying the gloomy mood of the poem as readers will pity him for what he has to do, despite not wanting to. The phrase â€Å"hundred agonies in black-and-white† refers to the hundreds of soldiers who have died during the war, bring about a sense of sorrow and depression, and the image of the many lives lost during war further contributes to the depressing feel of the poem, brought about by immense human suffering. Therefore, by using vivid imagery, the poet is able to make the readers envision the scene of war, and in the process create a depressing and gloomy mood. In conclusion, through the use of language and vivid imagery, the poet creates a gloomy and depressing mood throughout the poem to bring about the sorrow of human suffering and clearly indicate the cruelty of war and the drastic effects it has on many.

Conceptual Art as a Break From Conventions

Conceptual Art as a Break From Conventions Discuss arguments for and against the view that Conceptual Art should be regarded not simply as a break with previous conventions of visual art, but as a category of art with reference to specific works from the period 1965-75. Conceptual Art has become the term given to works intended to convey an idea or concept to the perceiver, in the spirit of resistance to traditional materialist views of art works as precious commodities. Conceptual Art was first recognised as a movement in the 1960s. Art objects were rejected entirely, and replaced by analysis concepts. A new intellectualism was sweeping through the art world, and art objects alone were no longer enough, a meaning was suddenly imperative. Conceptual Art is so dependent upon its supporting text that the original point of creative work sometimes appears to have been entirely subsumed in textual exegesis. The question is to what degree works with so little of art about them can still be named, or understood, as art. And if we cannot understand them as art, how are we to understand them? Frieds 1967 essay Art and Objecthood will form the backbone of this essay. The seminal and highly controversial work was a kind of riposte to Judd and Morris, who he decried as literalists, coining the term to describe attitudes in opposition to his abstractionist interpretation of Modernism. For Fried, its theatricality has always represented a symptom of the decadence of literalist works of art, a decadence which establishes a staged relationship between object and beholder. The theatricality that so bothered Fried incorporated not only a regrettably mimetic space, but a mimetic time, too. Fried preferences a kind of Modernism that is more authentically abstract: insisting Modern artworks should be abstracted from pretence, from time and from a sense of object. The publication of Frieds essay brought to light to divisions within the Modernist tradition, and seemed to indicate that the heart of these divisions lay in the philosophical conflicts between Idealism and Materialism. SoFrieds dislike of the term Minimal Art or Conceptual Art has caused him to rename it Literalist Art. He points out that the ambition of Judd and his contemporaries is to escape the constraints of painting: the restrictions imposed by the limitations of the canvas. Composition and the effort to createa pictorial illusion are never, according to Fried, quite convincing enough, quite original enough, to be satisfying. Donald Judd explained the problem: Whenyou start relating parts, in the first place, youre assuming you have a vague whole- the rectangle of the canvas- and definite parts, which is all screwed up, because you should have a definite whole and maybe no parts According to Fried and his school, painting is doomed to failure, but perhaps some resolution will arrive with the introduction of a new dimension. He pronounced conceptual (literalist) art as something novel, a category of modern art for all those barely representative works that required a literary back up. In practice, the new dimension brings with it a new focus on the relationships within the work. Judd refers to the relational character of his sculptures as their anthropomorphism, speaking of the correspondence between the spaces he creates, and both Judd and Morris are concerned with unity, completeness, creating a perfect shape capable of overwhelming the fragmentary components. In many ways nothing has physically changed in sculpture since the 1960s. There seems to be a constant effort to relate parts in Catherine de Monchauxs recent sculpture, although her work, unlike Judds, is more obviously and shameless anthropomorphic in its forms. Her structures appear to be based on the human body, and her titles are like the titles of poems or fairytales. Wandering about in the future, looking forward to the past is virtually surrealist, it seems arbitrary to call this minimalist when the emphasis is notclearly on objects declaring the status of their existence, but instead on some fantasy story. Never Forget seems to be about memories, the past, things being opened up, revealed and mapped out in a symmetrical and rather beautifulway. Both these works are concerned with the impossible project of re-membering, putting things back together from their parts- and the contrast with Judd is clear- to the extent that they are about parts being reassembled into an ideal wh ole, de Monchauxs sculptures are more like paintings. In many ways, her work resembles Carl Andres- particularly his Venus Forge. The viewers experience of the work will obviously depend on whether the work is perceived as an object or a subject. This repeats the problem of categorizing conceptual art. From the objects perspective, a new category of art has been created through Conceptualism, situating it in a new historical milieu. From the viewpoint of the subjective viewer, perhaps, such categories are irrelevant, but even the layman must be aware of a mute subject matter hinting at a break in convention, thus placing new emphasis on meaning. In Frieds conception, the art object becomes animated and serves the holistic aspiration of the artist. But the art works subjectivity does not elevate the artist- they have created an object capable of representing itself, and, like Frankenstein observing his monster, are themselves both the observers and observed. If Hesse is, as her diaries suggest, a woman observing herself, then she has an immediate affinity with Judd. Both artists are engaged in a project of self-replication, where sculpture is an extension of themselves- something projected into space, imbued with some kind of life, in the words of Chav and Fried, written into existence. Frieds idea can be read as gender-neutral, but the phallocentric commentaries of feminist writers such as Camille Paglia Hesses feminist works can be read with a melancholic tone of a woman conscious of and raging about a sexual debt -but they do not have to be. Paglia finds male and female equality in Eastern religious traditions: cultures built around ongoing horizontal natural rhythms, unlike the western male preoccupation with vertical climax. Hesses interest in the body is, in Paglias terms.chthonic- she claimed she wanted to keep her work in the ugly zone, her work defined by Stallybrass as all orifices and symbolic filth physical needs and pleasures of the sexual organs. So while Hesse works almost unconsciously asa woman, in the most natural and inevitable way finding affinity with the dirty reality of natural processes, she does not necessarily work with an agenda to liberate women- at least not through the symbolism she employs. She is not seeking illusory freedom in creating an alternative heterocosm through sculpture- she is merely expressing what is going on inside her, writing the body. Paglias vision of the wholeness of femininity is irresistibly connected to Frieds emphasis on shape, what secures the wholeness of the object is the singleness of the shape. In order for a work to qualify as a painting it must, Fried says, hold a shape. Without form, it is experienced as an object. Modernist paintings mission was to stave off accusations of objecthood, and to retain shape-character- persona. Minimalist (literalist, Conceptual) art, on the other hand, embraces its objecthood and strains to project it at every opportunity. It is not concerned about movements or history, social context orcategorization merely with the emphatic declaration of its authentic self;its materials; its construction. Conceptual art, for Fried, is a new genre of theatre and includes the beholder. However, a new genre of theatre, to the extent that theatre is an art, reinforces the idea that Fried is declaring conceptual art as a whole new category of art. I have chosen Hesse as an example, because her work spans a period of decades leading up to the present, and it is important to frame our question in its historical context. Watching how conceptual art has (or rather, has not) changed in nature over the past forty years informs our judgement of its impact. Hesse has always experimented with conceptual work, and Frieds theory holds true for her there is certainly something implacably theatrical about this artists sculpture, the in-jokes, the sexual punning, the scale. There is also an inescapable recurrence of the void as a symbol. While its tempting to class all holes as signifiers of feminine anxiety or unsatisfaction, it may not always be terribly helpful. Hang Up, for example, is not even a r eal empty canvas- its been beautifully painted, just all in one colour. It lurches out at us with its alien grayness, the passage of time and its monocrome simplicity lending it an amateur dramatics eeriness, this is no painting. It is a textbook example of Frieds notion of theatrical sculpture, and an example so clearly handmade that it recalls other hand crafted artworks, and by extension a dozen other women artists- and raises the point that perhaps Frieds theatricality theory is extraordinarily effective with female artists after all. It certainly helps to spin the boys club character of 60s minimalism- if craft and animation invokes the feminine and can be imposed or unveiled in the most surprising places, due to a theory, then this theory must have some value as a gender-leveling power. Simplifying the way an object is understood Fried does, abstracting the meaning from the object then returning it to it, makes gendered readings impossible. Fried allows art works to proclaim t heir own meaning, but less esoteric critics, perhaps more Marxistones such as T.J Clarke, never returned the meaning to the art object: the objecthood in itself was nothing without context. It is these historicist art critics who see all art as abstracted until contextualized who believe conceptual art is the most extreme and intolerable form of abstraction, and who believe it represents a slightly troublesome break from convention but nothing that cannot be subdued with some thorough historical context. Conclusion For many, the term Conceptual Art, like Modernism, suggests more of an attitude than a category with strictly defined limits. Minimalism might have been the last great modernist movement, 1973 the year modernism died and post-modernism ushered in, but none of this really helps us to understand how to read art, or why certain kinds of objects are made in certain ways. Ultimately, labelling art as a new category seldom teaches us much more than how to label art. As one commentator stated (of music), Just because something sounds crunchy and angular doesnt mean it is modern. Yet in one sense he is wrong modern, like conceptual is a term that can be applied according to individual interpretation, the subject/object problemagain. There is a strong case for the argument that conceptual art was tagged retroactively by supporters of the literary elite imposition of meaning on abstract works, but there is a more intuitive one still that suggests all artis open to classification as conceptual, nullifying the movement as a historicist ploy and returning power to the viewer. Even Frieds extraordinary theories are somehow conceptual as he asks us to read all art objects through the filter of a vocabulary of objecthood. Similarly which argument one chooses to follow up is, of course, a subjective matter. Bibliography Cooper H. (cat)Eva Hesse: a Retrospective, Yale, London (1992) Gaiger, P. The Search for Truth in Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard and Sophocle

The scholar is engaged in the interminable quest for truth. The knowledge that one can never understand everything makes a person wise. Ignorance is the assumption that one can understand all about the world around them. An ignorant person is so confident they comprehend the truth, that they are blind to the greater truth. Anton Chekhov and Sophocles deal with the idea of this sinful pride that leads to ignorance in their respective works, The Cherry Orchard and Oedipus Rex. In each drama, certain characters are slapped in the face with the truth; the light is revealed. However, these characters make the connection when it is too late. Their destruction is already destined to become a reality, a horrid fate that could have been prevented. Both Chekhov and Sophocles present the universal theme that an open mind, constantly in search for truth, is the mark of a worthy individual, and prideful stubbornness can only lead to demise. The question must then be asked, what truths are evident in these texts? Oedipus is the proud king of a county called Thebes. However, his country has fallen on hard times as a result of angry gods displaying their wrath. The oracle reveals to Oedipus that the curse shall be lifted when the murderer of the former king is put to justice. As the incriminating evidence piles up against Oedipus, he remains ignorant of the truth that he is the killer whom he seeks. He stubbornly refuses to believe that he cannot escape his fate. Sophocles presents this ironic truth in light and dark imagery. The chorus dramatically demands, â€Å"Artemis, Huntress, / Race with flaring lights upon our mountains / [†¦] Whirl upon Death, that all the Undying hate! / Come with blinding torches, come in joy!† (Sophocles l.198-204). The... ...hile she awaits the news of what happened to the cherry orchard, she is still kidding herself with false hope, ignorant hope. She did not want to see the truth, and now her fate is sealed. Had she opened her eyes, things might have ended up differently. Trofimov tells her to look the dreadful truth straight in the eye because she â€Å"served [her] own destruction† (Sophocles l.1468. 20). And yet, despite the wisdom of our predecessors, do we not still find our vision obscured by a prideful stubbornness, our eyes sealed against the light of truth? Works Cited Chekhov, Anton. How Belief Systems Effect Politics :: essays research papers

The belief systems of the modern world have helped determine the policies and politics of nations around the world. For centuries before, and almost definitely for decades after now, there will be disputed between people and countries on account of their faith. Religions have started wars, ended them, impacted, and persuaded people. Needless to say, beliefs are very influential on the world today. People of different faiths don’t only fight over their basic beliefs and land but they end conflicts. Making amends between religious groups greatly helps relieve the constant strain of division that we are all too aware of these days. The Lutheran religion began 482 years ago when monk, Martin Luther, attacked the practices of the Catholic Church. These who followed his ideas eventually into what we call Lutherans today. For those 482 years, Lutherans and Catholics have stayed divided on uneasy terms. Now the leaders of the modern Lutheran and Catholic churches both signed a document that laid to rest those many years of differences under the explanation that it was all a misunderstanding. Sometimes different faiths just don’t seem like they want to even try to compromise on a conflict. The Jordanian Muslims and the Israeli Jews fighting over which side of the Jordan River Jesus was baptized on is a perfect example of this. The Muslims have invested over one million dollars t fix up the site. The site will bring in expectantly millions of tourists and with them billions of dollars that will be spent locally to boost the economy. Looking past the irony of the Jews and Muslims disputing over a Christian site, the focal point of the quarreling is that such a site will bring. The Pope and Prince Charles have already scheduled a visit, but as of now, no resolve has come about. These days it’s not always conflicts between two specific regions, but between regions occupied by faiths who disagree on certain topics. The two groups being the Israelis and the Palestinians, and the compromise on the rift in the settler movement conflict arising in those countries. To the Jews the West Bank is part of the greater Land of Israel, given by God to the Jews. To cement their control over the land, the Jews built forty-two hilltop encampments on the West Bank. They did this to prevent it from becoming a Palestinian state. The Palestinian government claimed that some of the outposts didn’t have the necessary building papers and twelve of those sites were dismantled.

The Network Operating System For Habibi’s Restaurant

Log-on securities are delicate in protecting the computer network. As a restaurant that uses computers to enhance faster communication in a more efficient and less time consuming way must be aware of certain software updates to ensure the safety of the computer services. Defined in Wikipedia (2007), the system must be using the software NOS or network operating system hence this controls networking, the messages that comes like traffic and queues when many users are using the network. The software does not only aid in the quick access but it also does some administrative functions and has an especial function when it comes to security. Compared to the available softwares like OS's or Windows XP, NOS run to enhance the optimum network performance and the software is commonly used in local area networks or to a wide area networks but is also applicable to a broader array of networks. NOS are based in the 5 layers of OSI reference model. The restaurant could use the latest available NOS like Novell Netware, Windows NT and 2000, Sun Solaris and IBM OS/2 to achieve the best performance in the administrative level. Many important programs are protected by NOS like it could provide back-up for processors, protocols, automatic hardware detection and support multi-processing, security measures like authentication, authorization, logon restrictions and access control. Other featured programs are the name and directories, back-up and replication services, internetworking or routing and WAN ports. With the use of these remote access systems the administration could log on and log off efficiently. The NOS also aids in auditing, graphic interfaces, clustering, tolerance to fault and high availability system. In using the Windows Server 2003 the Active Directory compatibility could be enhanced. There is also better deployment support when it comes to the transition like for example from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional. The security services are answered by changes in the IIS web server. It is rewritten for the enhancement of security. While the Distributed File System have many functions including the maintenance of multiple hosting of DFS single server , terminal server , active directory , print server , and other programs or services. There are new versions of Windows Server that can be used via the Remote Desktop Protocol for terminal services. This program can have a multiple functions as well as in remote graphical logins for fast performances from the distant server. The IIS as it is used in Windows Server 2003 increases the default security system because of the built in firewall that can break defaults.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In March 2005 new improvements and updates were incorporated to Windows Server 2003 like the Windows XP containing users like Service Pack 2. The following programs are the updates for Windows Server 2003. (1) There are Security Configuration Wizard that can enhance the administrator's research in making changes and security policies. (2) Another program is Hot Patching that allows DLL, the driver and non-kernel patches for a non reboot function. (3) The IIS 6.0 Metabase Auditing is responsible in tracking or editing of metabases. (4) The Windows XP Service Pack 2 could be effectively converted to Windows Server 2003 by using the Windows Firewall system. With package like the Security Configuration Wizard that can be used by the administrators for more manageable incoming open ports and hence it can be detected automatically because the default roles could be selected. (5) For the support of IPv6, Wireless Provisioning Services is used. This also builds new defenses against SYN flood TCP assault. (6) Default modes can be turn on when a Service Pack 1 server is booted after its installation, and is made possible by Post-Setup Security Updates , hence it configures the firewall to barricade all incoming connections, and able in directing the user for updates installation. (7) Buffering could be prevented if (DEP) or Data Execution Prevention has to be used. The No Execute (NX) does not allow overflow especially in cases that there is an attack by Windows Server vectors. The Windows Server 2003 R2 is the newest update with installable features for Windows Server 2003 that includes SP1. The software has many systems of function like (1) Branch Office Server that is very capable in centralization of tools in the administrator like the files and printers, enhancement of Distributed File System (DFS), the WAN data replication responsible for Remote Differential Compression. (2) The Identity and Access Management for Extranet Single Sign-On and identity federation, centralization of administration in extranet application access, automated disabling of extranet access in consideration to the Active Directory account information, the user access logging and cross-platform web Single Sign-On and or password synchronization with the use of Network Information Service (NIS). (3) Storage Management for the File Server Resource Manager that can have a storage utilization reporting function, enhancement of quota management, the file screening limits files types are allowed and the storage Manager for Storage Area Networks (SAN) for the function of storage array configuration. (4) The Server Virtualization serves in the 4 virtual instances. (5) The SDK for UNIX utilities that gives a full Unix development environment examples are Base Utilities, SVR-5 Utilities, Base SDK, GNU SDK, GNU Utilities, Perl 5, Visual Studio Debugger Add-in. The Windows Server 2003 contains Datacenter edition which allows an 8-node clustering that could help lessen fault tolerance. By means of clustering, the fault tolerance of server installations is boosted and is accessible. The clustering also supports the file storage that is connected to Storage Area Network (SAN). This could run in Windows and also to non-Windows Operating systems as it can be connected to other computers. To block data's or redundancy and to achieve fault tolerance, the Windows Storage Server 2003 uses the RAID arrrays for these functions. A Storage Area Network is available in Windows Storage Server 2003 where the data's are transferred then stored in bigger chunks and not by files. Therefore the data's transferred are more granular, because of that there is a higher performance in database and transaction processing, while it permits NAS devices to get connected in SAN. The Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 has a Single Instance Storage (SIS) contained in the file server to optimize high perfromance. The (SIS) can transfer or scan files in volumes moving it to the common SIS store, thereby reducing the storage bulk by 70%. As stated by Couch (2004) installation of data protection systems like the uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), redundant array of independent disks (RAID), and tape backup systems that are provided by Windows Home Server will aid in the maintenance of the network. Brand Consciousness Among Teenagers Essay

Mass media is media which is intended for a large audience. It may take the form of broadcast media, as in the case of television and radio, or print media, like newspapers and magazines. Internet media can also attain mass media status, and many mass media outlets maintain a web presence to take advantage of the ready availability of Internet in many regions of the world. Some people also refer to the mass media as the â€Å"mainstream media,† referencing the fact that it tends to stick to prominent stories which will be of interest to a general audience, sometimes ignoring controversial breaking news. Many people around the world rely on the mass media for news and entertainment, and globally, mass media is a huge industry. Usually, mass media aims to reach a very large market, such as the entire population of a country. By contrast, local media covers a much smaller population and area, focusing on regional news of interest, while specialty media is provided for particular demographic groups. The advantage of running operation in mass media is that one can set up a platform of medium to disseminate favorable message. The advantage of attacking mass media is that one can build up his/her reputation for being less biased and more objective. The advantage of co-operating with mass media is that one can ease the worries of being â€Å"black mouthed† by media organizations. The advantage of buying corporate engaged in mass media is that one can get a big asset for negotiation with political parties and the government. Disadvantages of mass media Well I believe it comes down to the parents or guardians to begin with. Of course younger generations shouldn’t be watching as much TV if at all. Most of the primetime shows and stations are becoming more and more passive on what not to show. Having younger children subjected to nudity, cursing, sexual immorality, drinking and other negative adult oriented material is of course unsuitable, heck even unsuitable for adults at times. If the parents let their children watch inappropriate shows on TV I’m sure studies have shown the likelihood of these children being involved in such problems later on in life.

5 Strategies for Tackling SAT Subject Tests

You’ve probably heard plenty about the SAT. But SAT subject tests may be less familiar. What exactly are they? Should you take them? Want tips on how to prepare? Read on to learn what you can expect from the tests and our advice for how to do achieve high scores. Formerly known as the SAT II, an SAT subject test covers your specific knowledge of a given subject area, as opposed to the SAT, which covers general knowledge of only English and math. There are 20 individual subject tests across math, science, English, history, and foreign languages, and you may choose whichever tests you wish to take based on your individual strengths and knowledge areas. However, do keep in mind that if you are applying for certain majors or programs at some schools, you may be required to submit results from specific subject tests. SAT subject tests are administered six times per year, but not all subjects are offered in each sitting. Visit the CollegeBoard’s website to find out when a given subject is offered. You may take 1-3 subjects in a single test sitting, and can add or opt out of tests on the day of with some limitations . However, you may not take subject tests on the same day you take the SAT. The most important reason why you should take SAT subject tests is that many colleges require them as part of the admissions process. To find out which schools do, check out our list . Even colleges that don’t require them may still consider your results if you choose to take them, so they could give you an edge if you perform well. This is a good opportunity to demonstrate your strengths, since you’re able to choose your subjects, and could even compensate for weaker SAT scores, since you can show your aptitude in your strongest areas. If you’re self-taught or have studied certain subjects independently, SAT subjects tests can demonstrate that you’re a natural learner and seek out opportunities outside the classroom. Plus, your results can be used to determine placement or can be applied for credit at some colleges. Our students see an average increase of 250 points on their SAT scores. Remember: this is a chance to demonstrate your strengths in a particular area. Unlike the SAT, subject tests are more closely linked to the content you’ve studied in school. Therefore, if you’ve studied and done well in a particular subject, then chances are good that you’ll also do well on that particular SAT subject test. Of course, make sure to choose the subjects in which you perform best. For example if you’re a math whiz, opt for Math II. If you want another chance to prove your English prowess, take Literature. Also be sure to look into any requirements for the colleges to which you’re applying, since some programs may require specific tests. Make note of when specific tests are offered before you plan your schedule, and remember that you can’t take subject tests on the same day as the SAT. It’s a good idea to take the subject test around the same time as the AP for a given subject, since you’ll effectively be studying for both tests at the same time and will only have to do it once. That way, the material will still be fresh in your mind. You should also visit the CollegeBoard page for each test and consult the recommended preparation section. For instance, for Math II , CollegeBoard recommends â€Å"more than three years of college-preparatory mathematics, including two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and elementary functions (precalculus) or trigonometry or both.† You will also see a list of topics covered and anticipated skills you will need on this page, so make sure you’re familiar with these before you sit for the test. The good news is that there are plenty of resources available for practicing. It’s important to make use of them, because these tests are based on your knowledge of given subjects as opposed to rote skills. Here are a few resources: For every standardized test you take, you should come prepared with certain materials, such as pencils and your ID. But some SAT subject tests require additional materials. For instance, if you take a language with listening test, you will need a CD player. You are also allowed to use a calculator for both math tests, but be sure to make sure your brand and type is permitted. Also pay attention to materials you’re not allowed to bring. For example, you can’t use a calculator for Physics. Like the SAT, subject tests are scored on a 200-800 scale, with your percentile corresponding to a score between 200-800. You will also see your subscores, which are scaled between 20-80, for language with listening tests. All questions are multiple choice, and you lose a portion of a point for an incorrect answer. You do not lose credit for questions you do not answer. To learn more about scoring protocols, read CollegeBoard’s page, How SAT Subject Tests Are Scored . SAT subject tests are a great way to demonstrate your knowledge of certain areas and your strengths in the classroom. Even if the schools to which you are applying don’t require subject tests, they can still strengthen your application, and may help you receive credit or higher placement at some colleges. If you choose to take SAT subject tests, make sure to do your research and become familiar with the materials you need to know beforehand. Be sure to use the resources available to you to ensure you do your best. Looking for some more help for acing the SAT? The SAT Tutoring Program will help you achieve top scores on your test. We’ll pair you with two private tutors, one for reading, English, and writing, and one for math. All of our tutors have scored in the 99th percentile on the section they are teaching and are chosen based on teaching skills and ability to relate to their students.
